GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 14 : Peugeot

PSA has purchased Opel for a little bit less than 2 Billion euros. One of the keypoints behind this aquisition is the potential for PSA to exploit the Opel Ampera’s electric car technology. The deal states that PSA will be able to use all the Ampera patents held by the American seller General Motors, but for a limited time only and in certain areas of the world only.

In addition to this marriage, there is more good news for the PSA group, particularly for the Sochaux facility: the Peugeot 3008 was named « Car of the Year » by a jury of 58 international automotive journalists. The 3008 won by 25 points ahead of the Alfa Romeo Giulia…competition was tight…

Following many previews at the CES in Las Vegas, car manufacturers are increasingly using high-tech fairs to reveal their high tech cars… Presented a week before at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Peugeot Instinct concept car was displayed in Geneva. This ‘shooting break’ created by Gilles Vidal and his team, has a hybrid-gasoline powertrain configuration. Even if the exterior design is appealing, it is not revolutionary. It does seem that more and more manufacturers are exploring the four-door/coupe/station wagon look – consider at the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo for instance. The Instinct lines are nicely chiseled. The rear wheels have powerful haunches and the long hood hints at the power of this 300 HP, rechargeable hybrid. The engineers also paid considerable attention to the aerodynamics. For example, the grille which is flanked by and accentuated with long LEDs, looks closed and flush, but in fact it is « breathable », bringing fresh air to the necessary places at the required moment; either to the electric components, to the brakes or around the body.
But the exterior is not where you will find the real innovation. Indeed, this vehicle offers both an autonomous mode and artificial intelligence. When the driver sits in his seat, the car’s brain scans his present condition via his connected watch … If necessary, it suggests that the owner delegates the driving to the car. He always has the choice of letting the car drive itself and, if he accepts, the steering wheel automatically retracts into the dashboard and the owner entertains himself while the car chooses the best route and takes him safely to home. The Peugeot Instinct can even interact with the “internet of things”.
The Instinct can also be your coach. For example, if you are early and your physical data indicates a lack of activity, the interface will suggest you park a little bit further away and walk the last part of your journey…
Because the Instinct is intended to provide you with distractions while you are not driving, the interior is the place where the design work is most visible. Extra-large multimedia displays replace almost the entire dashboard. A touch pad is placed horizontally in front of the gear-shift lever. The interior experiments with many new and innovative materials and textures, including the floor which is formed out of ultra thin cement – yes cement.
Let’s be clear, however, if you are tired of all these features, if you are fed up with being “connected” 100% of the time, you can always go back “drive” mode and escape alone on a mountain road for a moment … or perhaps longer…

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 13 : Mercedes

As usual Mercedes introduced more exclusive cars in Geneva, such as coupés, convertibles, and off-roaders, adding to its already very wide range of offerings.
The most elitist is undoubtedly the G-Class Maybach Landaulet which, considering its price (more than 750,000 €) must offer the absolute pinnacle of luxury in a fully capable off-road vehicle. No need to talk about its V12 engine, let’s just “climb” into the vehicle with a little help from the electrically deployed steps… tall, isn’t it?
Once on board, we feel like being inside the first class cabin of an airplane. It is an extravaganza of leather with every conceivable diversified entertainment function. Not all of it exudes good taste, but if you are a powerful – and rich — person in this world you would be happy to parade around in this kind of vehicle.

Much more friendly and affordable, the new E-Class Convertible demonstrates once again that Mercedes is a master in the field. Complementing the new E Class sedan and coupé range, the convertible shares the front end with thèse models. With the top up, this cabriolet offers a very fluid line with a perfectly integrated roof line. No surprise with the interior which shares the instrument panel of the sedan, complete with its large and impressive multimedia screens. The whole feeling is modern and as usual with Mercedes, it projects a high-quality level…with the corresponding prices.

Displayed alongside the new BMW 5 series wagon, (the BMW stand was next to AMG…) the AMG E Class station wagon flexed its muscles to show the full breadth of AMG “savoir-faire”.
Needless to say, Mercedes presented its vehicles in their most luxurious spécifications consistent with the flavour of the show…

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 12 : Mazda

Mazda is the most understated Japanese manufacturer, but who doesn‘t know about the MX5 convertible, perhaps better known as the Miata?
At the Geneva show, Mazda revealed a hardtop version of its latest itération of this small sports car. For those customers who think that the canvas top is not what they want for all-season use, Mazda now offers a rigid roof that is partially retractable, very practical and functional. The fast-back design, allows the roof and rear window to be retracted, leaving the « flying buttresses » in place and giving it more of a targa appearance.
Of course, it will always be a vehicle just for two with a very small trunk, but Mazda is the only manufacturer that offers a convertible that puts a smile on your face as soon as you step in, and allows you to cruise with the wind in your hair for less than 40.000 €.
Mazda also unveiled its new CX5 SUV, a direct competitor for the Peugeot 3008 and the VW Touran. Mazda offers a completely credible alternative to the two European stars with a distinct style, a finish that is clearly improving and the ability to meet the expectations of customers who want to go off the beaten track. The front is elegant with a well-designed grille that is somewhat less aggressive than the 3008. The profile view seems a little generic and altogether too similar to what we have seen elsewhere. The cockpit is simple, but well finished.
Ultimately, this new CX5 will meet the needs of those looking for an unostentatious SUV that meets the needs of the family while providing good off-road performance with its four-wheel drive version.
Mazda also introduced the new CX3. This smaller SUV further proves that Mazda always knows how to offer vehicles that stand out for their exterior styling as well as their functional qualities.
The interior with its three dials in the instrument cluster contrasts with the current fashion of the single screen, all electronic look. All the modern features offered by the competitors are still available, however, and the de rigueur central infotainment screen is very much in place.

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 11 : Honda

This Honda concept is a 100% electric vehicle that is able to learn the habits of its drivers. In short — an artificial intelligence.
The NeuV is based on the principle that private vehicles remain inactive 96% of the time … So the concept behind this vehicle is to monetize this time of inactivity for the owner by leasing the vehicle to others in an autonomous driving mode.
The Honda NeuV is also supposed to be a form of artificial intelligence using an « emotion engine » called HANA (Honda Automated Network Assistant) that learns the emotions of the driver (owner) by analyzing his or her judgment in each situation. This will allow HANA to recommend choices to the owner.
A giant touch-panel interface completes the user experience. The large and dramatic, “rotating” doors facilitate entry/exit, while the sloping belt line provides maximum outward visibility.
There are just two seats, but a luggage compartment at the back provides storage for a concept electric scooter to make that last kilometer. In fact this car has everything to enter the multimodal era.
This concept was introduced at the last Consumer Electronics Show to demonstrate the potential for artificial intelligence and robotics to transform the experience of mobility in the future and to improve our quality of life. Honda’s intention is to go beyond exploring the future of cars, by developing effective energy solutions for all its product sectors including motorcycles and power tools.

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 10 : Ford

FORD remains the only American manufacturer present in Europe. (Is FIAT-Chrysler American or Italian…?).
Ford Europe still has a wide range of cars to cover the whole market — from city car to the Ford Mustang sports coupé and many SUVs. Ford chose Geneva to launch its new Fiesta, the sixth opus in 40 years.
For this new car, FORD offers many different versions for its customers using the latest technology content. How does Ford manage to keep production costs reasonable? That we don’t know…But we are sure that every customer will find a Fiesta to suits his taste and needs…
The new Fiesta is bigger with a completely new body design. Volumes are bolder and it feels like a bigger car than the previous generation. Design of the front lights is modern with tapered optics. The grille is elegant without being massive. The rear also is elegant with nice detailing on the lights.
Once installed in the cockpit, the first impression is one of clarity, especially with the optional large glass roof, then you are attracted to the dashboard and it is clear that this area received special attention from designers and HMI experts. The whole feeling is modern with good quality materials, supporting the visual and physical environment. The large central multimedia display replaces the many buttons of the old version and provides access to a wide range of functions depending on the model selected. The customer has access to a whole new world while staying very well connected and taking advantage of the diverse driving aïds on offer. Four people will enjoy pleasant travel in the new FIESTA and remain fully entertained.

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 9 : Ferrari

The 812 Superfast unveiled in Geneva is the most powerful and fastest Ferrari ever produced. A V12 engine producing 800 hp (hence the name 812, 8 for 800 and 12 for V12 …) to celebrate the 70 years of the Maranello brand. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels only. But this car is equipped with a four-wheel steering system. The body is made of aluminum. The style is aggressive and carved to perfection. The full LED projector headlamps incorporate air inlets. The four taillights are round and echo the great history of the brand. However, photos are more meaningful than words for such a car…

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 8 : Dacia

This “low cost” subsidiary of Renault is doing very well. Thanks for asking. Many major car manufacturers, Renault competitors, are investigating this promising market, which is very much in tune with the times.
DACIA, which has had a complete range of cars for a few years now, is experimenting, like other car companies, with limited editions. This is the case with the Duster and the Stepway both of which will benefit from special colors, a more rewarding interior and various other features. DACIA now offers cars very different from the “basic transportation concept” that marked its debut. Overall quality has improved a lot with the use of more friendly and attractive plastics for example and the designers have been given more freedom to create appealing exteriors. DACIA has nothing to envy about its major competitors…except brand image perhaps. But price makes all the difference.
DACIA launched the Logan MCV Stepway in Geneva. This SUV is elegant with a detailed grille and a strong character line. The tailgate provides great accessibility without making the car look like a commercial vehicle. The interior is modern. The IP is clear and readable. Of course, you don’t have the latest digital technologies that could find in some other SUV’s, but you get the essentials… It feels good inside the MCV Stepway, so we don’t have any doubt that this will be another bestseller for DACIA.
Nowadays, a DACIA customer does not have to feel like he or she is buying “half” of a Renault car, or an obviously cheap car, but rather a reasonably elegant means of transportation that meets their needs…..without showing off !

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 7 : DS

The DS display was radically different from that of Citroën.
The will to emphasize moderation and luxury is evident, with the future DS7 Crossback as its masterpiece. This is the first SUV for DS and the target is clearly the Audi Q5. The first thing catching the eye is its size, which is quite imposing. The second is the great classic look of the body compared with the rest of the DS range. If you look at the DS7 from ¾ view, it really feels like a Q5…
It seems that DS design team realized that the DS3, 4 and 5 style might be too ostentatious, which is not what premium customers want…The DS7 use of LED lights gives a real signature to this SUV. The oversized grille has an impressive diamond effect. The rear has a silvery metal line designed to bring a distinctive and wider look to the car.
The interior is rather classic, with a luminous feeling. Controls are squared and fall easily under your hands with ergonomics that are well thought out. The driver does not have to make any effort to become familiar with the functions. Various packages will offer different environments up to the most luxurious one that combines wood, leather and metal. Of course, most of the trendy driver assists will be on-board, with the use of a full digital instrument panel designed exclusively for Citroen/DS. The original BRM « deluxe » watch seems a little bit stuck by chance above the 12-inch multimedia display. Citroen, with DS is striving to enter the premium market competition with the DS7. We just hope that this vehicle, originally created for the Chinese market, will find its place in the European premium segment.

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 6 : Citroën

The first thing that catches your eye when approaching the Citroen display is a sensation of smallness, accentuated by the narrow layout. Is it a cost reduction, or the need to provide equal room for the DS brand? A band playing music welcomes us to discover two concepts:
The C Aircross and the Space Tourer 4*4 Ë.
The Aircross is a small SUV with a lot of interesting elements and bright colors. Citroen designers have succeeded in creating a vehicle that is an off-road looking concept with its well-proportioned plastic protection panels, its ring-shaped lights, its clean and simple dashboard, but it also has nice welcoming seats and a livability that will fit the entire family. The future replacement of the C3-Picasso is off to a great start. Of course, we can expect conventional doors on the production vehicle that is expected towards the end of the year. We don’t know yet if an all-electric version will be available in production, but this could be a good direction for Citroen. There are still two questions to be solved: how to manage competition (now internal since PSA bought Opel) from the Opel Crossland X and what the future of the now dated looking Cactus will be?

The Space Tourer 4*4 Ë is an evolution of the vehicle which is both utility and family oriented, derived from the van introduced last year. The Ë does not stand for “electric” here…It is supposed to stand for a lifestyle in Citroen vocabulary. The car is therefore a utility, leisure, four-wheel drive, family oriented mix between a Van and an SUV. The color effects and the Ë logo itself give a young and modern effect to a rather classic interior and exterior. This Space Tourer can accommodate up to 9 people in the XS version.

GENEVA 2017 | EPISODE 5 : BMW

We know BMW is very faithful to the Geneva Autoshow. Usually the Bavarian company presents a lot of models in Switzerland, but not this year…Does BMW intend to favor the Asian fairs (Beijing to name but one…)? Or is it just a breath before the IAA in Frankfurt?
Of course, Geneva was an opportunity to see the new 5 series in the flesh for Europe, but we must say that this new model has already been seen at the NAIAS in Detroit.
For the Touring version this is the premiere. The interior is very close to the sedan, while the exterior is not surprising. As a whole it is perfectly realized, but this is normal for BMW. The typical customers will be satisfied with all the electronic innovations for driving assistance that now seem to be the standard fare from most manufacturers.

The 4 Series is now an entire range with 2 doors, 4 doors, cabriolet, etc. We must admit that the previous version has always been pleasing to our eyes and its success has not diminished this impression. So, no surprises with the new version. Why compromise a range that perfectly matches customers’ expectations and covers the gamut from practical sedan to coupe or convertible…?
For the passenger compartment, of course, the all-electronic instrumentation is now fully up to date with all possible options. The whole IP is laid out like a typical BMW cockpit with the usual perfect fir and finish – not unusual indeed…
During this Geneva show, BMW has demonstrated its ongoing desire to invest more and more in the world of “green” vehicles with a new version of the very high-end i8. We have always admired the lines of this hybrid vehicle. It is made very exclusive by its price, but still very appealing…
